Photograph is a film that captures momentary snapshots from life, confronting longing, class barriers, dignity and love. Directed by Ritesh Batra it stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui & Sanya Malhotra. The aim of the score was to allow light and depth to co-exist in the same film, staying true to the earthy and elemental feel of the film’s aesthetic. The score very much embraces the sense of hope that we can overcome our boundaries, both inner and outer. Whilst the story is set in modern day Mumbai, the music demonstrates the universality of the protagonists’ experience, which transcends culture. Woodwind, and specifically the clarinet, is used to shift from longing to hope and back again. When required, the score reaches out to celebrate the pride of ordinary life, utilising brass to help to achieve this.
